![]() ![]() ![]() Extend the density to the whole line by defining f( x)=0 for x < 0. Therefore, the function f( x) = β exp(-β x) is a probability density on D. The exponential function w( x) = exp(-β x) is positive on the interval D = [0, ∞).Let's illustrate these steps with two familiar examples: So- voila!-you have defined the PDF for a probability distribution! The function f is a probability density function (PDF) because f ≥ 0 and ∫ D f( x) dx = 1.įrom the density function, you can derive the cumulative distribution (CDF), quantile function, and random variates. LetĪ = ∫ D w( x) dx be the value of the integral.ĭefine f( x) = w( x) / A for all values of x. Integrable means that the integral of the function on D is finite. If necessary, extend w to the whole real line by defining it to be identically 0 outside of D. Choose any nonnegative, piecewise continuous, integrable function, w, on a finite or infinite domain, D ⊆ R.Here are the steps you can take to create a new probability distribution: In advanced courses such as measure theory, you learn that thereĪre certain technical restrictions on the function and its domain, but I will ignore those technical details in this article. You must normalize the function so that it has unit area over D. You can start with almost any positive (actually, nonnegative is okay) function such as a polynomial, exponential, or trigonometric function You might think that these mathematicians were very clever (they were!), but it isn't that difficult to create a new univariate continuous distribution Where did these distributions come from? Well, some mathematician needed a model for a stochastic processĪnd wrote down the equation for the distribution, typically by specifying the Familiar examples include the normal, exponential, uniform, gamma, and beta distributions. There are dozens of common probability distributions for a continuous univariate random variable. ![]()

Werdsmith works fairly well if you’re up to accept its nature of simple utility I’d like to see, however, the iCloud syncing engine rewritten to be more like Day One, as it’s not really immediate in this 1.1 version.Įven if you’re accustomed to more powerful solutions, you should take Werdsmith for a spin – it’s free and it works with iCloud. Keep in mind, though, that Werdsmith isn’t meant to be a text editor – rather, I see it as an iCloud-based scratchpad for writers, and it’s pretty decent at that. You can’t export notes in any format (only email sharing, and that’s it), there is no support for Markdown formatting (a must-have these days) and you can’t tag, search, or move notes around. Werdsmith is really simple, perhaps a little too simple for my tastes. ![]() A percentage will indicate how far you’ve gone into completing your project, and when you’re done you can tap on ‘Finish’ to archive it. You can save ideas as quick notes and leave them in your inbox, or you can make one a project and start writing against that word count. Werdsmith is aimed at writers, so a project will basically consist of a single note with a title and a goal – the latter being a minimum word count for your next essay, journal entry or blog post. In Werdsmith you can save ‘ideas’ and turn the most complex ones into ‘projects’. There is an annoying bug with scrolling long lists on the iPhone that sometimes requires a complete restart of the app I hope it’ll be fixed with an update. Overall, the design of the app is very clean, and reminds me of Wunderlist. Such app is Werdsmith from Australian developer Nathan Tesler, free with in-app purchase to unlock more space and available as a universal app for iPhone and iPad (no Mac version yet). Instead, what I’m seeing is a trend towards simpler note-taking applications that allow you to jot down quick notes and have them synced on iOS and, sometimes, Mac clients with iCloud support. Wildly popular when it comes to Dropbox sync (just to name a few: Elements, Notesy, Notely, Nebulous Notes), there hasn’t been a full-featured text editor to show up with iCloud sync yet. From preference syncing ( Consume, Instacast) to actual library storage ( Day One), it appears developers are now fully realizing the potential of iCloud as an automatic syncing solution across Apple’s devices (iCloud isn’t without its flaws, many developers say, and I hope the upcoming release of iOS 5.1 will also bring this kind of fixes).Īn area that’s been strangely absent from my App Store watch list of iCloud-enabled apps is that of text editors. In the past couple of weeks, I’ve seen an increasing number of developers implement iCloud’s documents & data storage in iOS and Mac apps. ![]() ![]() All were fresh and crisp and didn’t take over from the wine itself. Megapixels aren’t everything when it comes to image quality. It’s also easier to resize images if they have more pixels to work with. This allows you to produce prints that are larger and have a higher DPI. Pictures with a higher megapixel count will hold more information and have a larger image size. The Sony a7 III has a 24.2 megapixel sensor while the new Apple iPhone 14 Pro Max has a 48 megapixel sensor. Your camera’s sensor was built to pick up a certain amount of megapixels. A 24 megapixel image has a pixel height and pixel width of 4,000 x 6,000. You’re probably used to hearing resolution talked about in terms of pixels and megapixels. There’s a lot of marketing hype around big pixel dimensions, but I’m going to demystify this subject so that you can always print high quality photos. I see a lot of misconceptions about image resolution. Now that you’ve had a crash course on what influences print size, it’s time to talk resolution and image size. If your printer can’t handle 300 DPI, you might be restricted to smaller print sizes. Printer power is also going to impact the size of your print images. The 3×2 aspect ratio is one of the most popular for photography, but the right aspect ratio for your print will depend on your artistic goals. if you have a 300 DPI image file, you’ll get high quality prints in just about any regular size.Īspect ratio is the next thing to unpack when it comes to how print size works.Īn aspect ratio is the measurement of the horizontal and vertical lengths of an image. The global standard for printer resolution is 300 DPI. ![]() Printers, on the other hand, use a similar measurement called dots per inch. Pixels per inch, or PPI, only measures the screen resolution of your images. Every digital screen measures its resolution using either pixels per inch or pixels per centimeter depending on where in the world you live. Likewise, you can just hit print and hope for the best or you can master a few basic details about print images that will take your photo prints to a whole new level. However, you can quickly level up your photography game by mastering a few basics. It’s really easy to get started with the basics of photography by picking up a point-and-click camera or just shooting on your smartphone. Printing off your photographs is a lot like photography itself. ![]() ![]() ![]() To discuss bookkeeping, please contact us. A bookkeeper is usually responsible for writing the 'daybooks.'
